La Mairena

Start Point:
There will be no coffee before the walk, for the simple reason that there are no open bars in La Mairena. The starting point is not easy to find so we will meet at the roundabout in La Marena by the German school. To get to La Mairena (if you come from the east) take the A-7 towards Marbella and exit at the first big Elviria-sign. There is also a sign for La Mairena just at the exit. Go straight through the roundabout just you have exited. You should now be on Avenida España and if you manage to stick to that one it will take you all the way to La Mairena. It is not entirely easy so I’d better give you some hints. In the next roundabout you should take the second exit slightly to the right then you should stick to the road that seems to be the main road. If you run into trouble before you reach the toll road, keep right. The first thing you will see when you get to La Mairena is a big roundabout. Stop close by and I will pick you up from here. Please make sure you are there no later than 10:15. We will drive some more kilometres to the starting point.
10 km Duration: 3,5 - 4 hrs
Meet Point:
El Soto Golf Club
10:15 Leader: Mats Tornborg
We did this walk the first time about five years ago, just after the fire in the mountains above Elviria. It was like walking in a gigantic barbeque after the party was over. Now there is no visual evidence of the fire but the lack of trees is a sign that something has happened. The entire walk is on driveable roads though you might need a 4x4 in some places. The walk is only 10.4 km long but there are some uphill so I classify it as moderate. The walk has the best place for a lunch stop. If the weather is clear we will be able to see Africa in the southwest, Gibraltar in the west and Benalmadena in the east. There is almost no shade along the walk so do bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water particularly if a warm day is forecast.
